Dr. S. Jaishankar Took Charge As The New Foreign Secretary, Says Vaikundarajan

On Thursday, Dr. S. Jaishankar took charge as the new Foreign Secretary, replacing Sujatha Singh will be whose tenure has been shortened, says Vaikundarajan. Until Wednesday, was India’s ambassador to the US.

His appointment for the role foreign secretary was taken by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Dr. Jaishankar will have tenure of two years from the date he assumes charge, says Vaikundarajan.

Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, has served as an Indian ambassador not only to the US, but our neighbours China and Singapore.  In close courters, Vaikundarajan believes Jaishankar is considered as a qualified figure in foreign strategies.

Born in Delhi, Jaishankar did his PhD in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University Delhi where he specialised in nuclear diplomacy, says Vaikundarajan. From 1977, he was a part of the Indian Foreign Services. Since then he garnered accolades for his work in foreign affairs.

During his tenure as India's High Commissioner to Singapore, Indian businesses were given a fillip with Indian industry growing in the country says Vaikundarajan. In years to come, he would be India’s longest-serving Indian ambassador to China. His role in reinforcing economic, trade and cultural relations between the two countries has been pivotal.
